Job Description: Position Summary: The Veteran Specialist will assist in the coordination and implementation of services to veterans and their families. The Veteran Specialist will focus on transitioning veterans from military to college to civilian careers. The specialist will work with Student Services programs, procedures, and guidelines at the assigned NWTC campus (es) and/or centers. Assist current and prospective returning veterans and family members to utilize the resources available to them through the Financial Aid Office and other services.

Base Pay: Full salary is $54,881 (2011-12 rates). Salary progression is at 90% for first year, 95% for second year and full salary at start of third year.
Education Required: • Bachelor’s degree in education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Counseling, Human Services or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience Required: • Professional work experience with veterans, which demonstrates an understanding of and sensitivity to their unique experiences. Veterans will receive priority review., • At least three years related work experience in a higher education institution, preferably student services., • Proven capability of working with veterans to ensure the highest standard of psychological treatment to a diverse clientele. Emphasis on treatment of PTSD, AODA issues, Traumatic Brain Injury, Anger Management, and working with transitional issues affecting veterans., • Working knowledge of the state and federal Departments of Veterans Affairs rules and regulations pertaining to all veteran and dependent related educational benefits., • Experience in advising, career planning, and/or placement services. • Knowledge and understanding of college admissions, career development, and financial aid processes., • Ability to plan, organize, promote and implement campus events, orientation sessions and educational workshops benefitting veteran students. • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with individuals at all levels of an organization including students, staff and the public., • Experience in written and electronic forms of data collection and management., • Commitment to an environment of inclusion and diversity., • Working knowledge of community resources available to NWTC students., • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills., • Conflict resolution skills necessary., • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations having diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. • Proven ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. Experience working independently and in a variety of standard/non-standard hours., • Working knowledge of computer software including student data base programs, MS Office and web-based products • Ability to travel to various locations within the district
