Job Description: Essential Job Functions: The police officer is a sworn peace officer position within the Office of Public Safety. The police officer will provide a full range of law enforcement and security services. Police officers will enforce laws; investigate complaints, suspicious matters and incidents which may have an impact of the University. In addition, the police officer is responsible for maintaining order, assisting people, identifying criminal activity, apprehending offenders, identifying the source of problems in the University community and collaborating with others to resolve issues. As a police officer, this individual will also be expected to engage in problem solving, initiate crime prevention measures, enforce criminal and traffic laws, ensure safety and security of people and property, investigate crimes, implement emergency procedures and administer basic first aid when necessary. Additionally, police officers are expected to write clear, concise, and detailed reports., Police officers operate under the general direction of a ranking officer, supervisor, training officer, as well as officers collaterally assigned as an Officer in Charge for a specific agency purpose. The police officer will support the department’s mission by providing essential functions while respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals.The candidate should have demonstrated commitment to or experience with diverse populations. Conditions of Appointment: Employment will require a thorough criminal background investigation, medical exam, psychological exam, vision screening, physical agility assessment and pre-employment drug screens. A pending criminal charge or conviction will not necessarily disqualify an applicant. In compliance with the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, the University does not discriminate on the basis of arrest or conviction record. A twelve-month probationary period will be required. Education Required: Qualifications: * Knowledge of investigative methods and techniques. * Knowledge of criminal and traffic laws. * Ability to actively and creatively employ problem solving techniques. * Skill in expressing facts and/or ideas orally and in writing in a clear, complete and concise manner. * Knowledge and skill in bike, foot and vehicle patrol techniques. * Knowledge and skill in first aid and CPR. * Effective human relations and communications skills to quickly and accurately transmit information to whoever may be requesting it. * Ability to observe and recall facts and details about persons, events, accident scenes, physical conditions and human behaviors in order to make appropriate quick decisions. * Knowledge and skill in defense and arrest tactics, emergency vehicle operation, use of force, crowd control techniques, and standard law enforcement equipment. * Ability to disseminate information from driver’s license and motor vehicle databases as well as other pertinent data obtained through the use of computer systems. * Ability to work under stressful conditions and maintain a high level of proficiency. * Ability to maintain the strength, stamina, dexterity and overall physical fitness required for the performance of duties and the ability to be on foot for eight to ten or more hours and possess the ability to take defensive measures in the event of physical assault. * Proficiency in word processing, database applications, and internet. * Ability to read and understand complex printed material. * Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks. Required Qualifications : * Candidates must have successfully completed a Wisconsin Department of Justice approved “Law Enforcement Recruit” training course or already be certified or certifiable by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) as a Law Enforcement Officer. Candidates who are anticipated to complete the above requirement no later than December 24, 2012 are eligible for consideration. * Possess or be eligible to obtain a valid Wisconsin driver’s license upon appointment and have a good driving record. * Have no unpardoned adult felony convictions; no convictions for domestic violence; and be “free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect performance” as a law enforcement officer. * Possess a high school diploma. * Possess a minimum of an Associate Degree -OR- be within 4 months of completing degree -OR- 60 college credits (at least 12 credits must be in Criminal Justice, Police Science, Sociology or related liberal arts field). * Ability to possess a firearm. Well qualified applicants will possess a Bachelor's Degree and have experience as a sworn law enforcement officer.
